An open humanoid
A robot you can read
This course is about a full-size walking humanoid whose whole design is published: the metal parts, the circuit board, the wiring, the motor list and the software that makes it walk. It was designed by RoboParty, who call it Roboto_origin. This course is based on their files. We are not RoboParty and they don't endorse this course.
How big
From RoboParty's specification:
- height 1.25 m, mass 34 kg,
- thigh 250 mm, shin 300 mm, each arm 440 mm long,
- 23 joints, every one driven by its own motor,
- joint torque up to 120 N·m,
- a 48 V 15 Ah battery that runs it for over two hours.
(The 3D model you're turning measures a little shorter than 1.25 m from sole to shoulder. That figure is the spec's, not ours.)
What it's made of
The main structure is aluminium, cut on CNC machines, sand-blasted and anodised black. A few parts that carry the most load are a stronger aluminium, and the ankle rods are steel. The outer covers are rubber, which is kinder to people and takes knocks better. RoboParty says it is still working to make the robot lighter.
Why "open" matters
Most humanoids are closed boxes. Here you can see why each part is where it is. That's what this course does: we'll go joint by joint, motor by motor and cable by cable, then make it walk in a simulator running the robot's real control software.
Not a toy
The real robot is heavy, strong and fast. RoboParty doesn't recommend it for anyone under 18, and people must stay more than 1 m away while it runs. In this course everything you do is in 3D and simulation.
